BRISBANE 14 Nov – It was one of the few quiet encounters between Amar and Mapen today, as the two battled for pride and honor on the cyber-chessboard. Previous meetings were by far, livelier than this one. As unusual as the atmosphere was, the outcome of it would certainly had bookmakers ripping off their hair. Having previously played all games on Mapen’s turf, this historical game was rather neutral in terms of venue. The match just took less than an hour, but Amar and Mapen used the time adequately to provide a thrilling battle. The former turned out as the eventual winner after suffering some devastating losses prior to the match. It proved to be a sweet revenge indeed, according to Amar, “I’ve always knew that this moment would come (beating Mapen), after those games (losses), he came in with high level of confidence, but unfortunately, it killed him!” Mapen couldn’t have agreed more, “Amar capitalized on my own arrogance. He deserves it.” Asked about the preparation for the game, Amar told, “Nothing special really. I knew it (to win), as if this win was destined on this day. So no extra sweat really (laughed).” The game was never completed without a moment of controversy. With the game in the dying seconds, Mapen bluntly requested an ‘Undo Move’ after a lengthy contemplation over his brave knight. As a great warrior of the game, Amar is never lack of sportsmanship as he allowed the game to flow smoothly, he insisted, “To win a game made me a king. But I’m a generous king too you know!” Mapen voiced his admiration cum surprise for Amar’s unconventional tactical approach to the game saying, “It took me by surprise. He unleashed the beast that had been in him this whole time and it was overwhelming.” However, Amar played down claims that he was going all out, “I never believed that attacking was the best form of defense. Discipline is. You tend to think more properly and calmly when discipline is in you. I didn’t want to have emotions get over me.” TIMES Magazine editor, William Donovan, was not short of praises of Amar pointing out the craft he used in the win, “It was the most beautiful 49 moves I’ve ever witnessed in my thirty years in the business. It was a pleasure to have seen it first hand.” One anonymous spectator was reportedly to have said, “Mapen was at the edge of his seat throughout the game. It almost looked like Amar had a big light bulb over his head before every move!” With this win, Amar proved his doubters wrong and most notably, Mapen, who have been nothing but a dominant force between the two in previous games.
